A Life of Learning

All my life I have enjoyed learning and have sought out learning opportunities. I feel invigorated when I am seeking out new information and investigating areas of interest. My passion for learning runs so deep that of course I want to share it with others! It was that desire that attracted me to the field of education.

In 2012, I completed a Master’s in Education from Stanford University with a focus on Learning, Design and Technology, where I had an opportunity to address a learning problem that I had witnessed students struggling with—multiplication. After careful research into what makes learning this concept so difficult, I designed a series of games that are played on a grid, thus reflecting the two-dimensional nature of multiplication in an authentic way. The suite of games is called Hip Hip Array! I hope these fun, interactive games will help students enjoy the process of learning multiplication and seeing the beautiful patterns inherent in the multiplication table itself.

In addition to my fun Master’s project, I enjoyed having the opportunity to learn about and participate in many projects and classes that were extremely rewarding, from doing a qualitative research project at a Rocketship school to designing curriculum for the Monterey Bay Aquarium to redesigning a learning experience for the Center for Teaching and Learning at Stanford. But most importantly, I had the opportunity to work with an amazing group of classmates and world-class leaders in education.

Now I look forward to what the next chapters in my life will bring. But one thing is for certain—I’m sure they will involve learning!

Collab-a-Cal: Students Making Choices Together

As part of a d.school class on "Innovations in Education", Liz McClure, Natalia Ronderos, Jessica Woodward, and I teamed up with Amy Collier at Stanford's Center for Teaching and Learning. The challenge? Designing a game for incoming freshman in the new Leland Scholars Program. Check out the project website and video.

Tagging and Tracking Marine Predators: Scientific Investigation and Environmental Advocacy

This marine science curriculum for 9th and 10th graders was authored by Tessaly Jen, Anna Ly, and Lisa Peterson. It was designed for the Monterey Bay Aquarium's teacher institute in cooperation with Lacey Moore. Through this curriculum, students learn core skills that scientists use to investigate the migration patterns of pelagic predators. In reflecting on this process, students are encouraged to think deeper about issues such as: how scientists make hypotheses about regions they cannot observe directly; and what animals need to sustain their lives.

An Evaluation Proposal of Messaging and Exhibits at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) Exploration Center

In planning for the opening of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center, Jennifer Bundy, Stephanie Chang, and Lisa Peterson prepared an evaluation plan to assess the effectiveness of exhibits. In order to make the assessments welcoming to visitors, the plan includes two activities and a pledge board. A tracking and timing tools rounds out the evaluation plan with a more formal evaluation strategy. Thank you to Lisa Uttal of the MBNMS Exploration Center for your input and support.

Visualizing the Common Core Standards

Are the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), released in 2009, intuitively understandable? Is the hierarchical structure of the standards consistent with how people think of the content? To find out I conducted a study to see how people would assemble the standards without the pre-determined hierarchy.

Hip Hip Array! Helping students discover mathematical patterns and structure by using the multiplication table as a game board.

Learning, Design and Technology
Stanford University School of Education

Math is beautiful. It's patterns and logic are inspiring. But many students struggle to master core concepts and give up in frustration. This is a tragedy! It is heartbreaking to see smart, capable students turn their backs on math--just because there is a missing link in their understanding. But when students see the patterns and master the concepts, they started to get excited! What if students could play math games that were both fun and educational? And what if these games could help students really see the structure and patterns of multiplication? What if the playing board was the multiplication table itself?
